How Japanese Sentence Structure Works

One of the biggest differences between English and Japanese is word order. English commonly follows a Subject–Verb–Object pattern, while Japanese often places the verb at the end of the sentence.

ENGLISH
I drink water.
JAPANESE
私は水を飲みます。

The basic structure can be understood as:

Topic + Object + Verb

In the example above, 私は means “I” as the topic, 水を means “water” as the object, and 飲みます means “drink.”

Japanese also uses particles such as は, が, を, に and で to show the grammatical role of words in a sentence.

Why Use a Japanese Sentence Builder?

Many beginners learn hundreds of Japanese vocabulary words but still have difficulty creating sentences. Sentence-building practice helps connect vocabulary with grammar.

  • Practice Japanese sentence patterns.
  • Learn where Japanese verbs go.
  • Practice common particles.
  • Review useful beginner vocabulary.
  • Build confidence reading Japanese sentences.
  • Learn through active practice instead of only memorization.
JAPANESE LEARNING FAQ

Japanese Sentence Builder FAQ

What is a Japanese sentence builder?

A Japanese sentence builder is an interactive practice tool that helps you learn Japanese word order by arranging words into grammatically correct sentences.

What is the basic Japanese sentence structure?

A common basic Japanese structure is Topic + Object + Verb. Japanese verbs usually come at the end of the sentence, although Japanese word order is more flexible than English.

Is this Japanese sentence practice suitable for beginners?

Yes. This tool starts with simple JLPT N5-level vocabulary, particles and grammar patterns suitable for Japanese beginners.

Why does Japanese put the verb at the end?

Japanese generally follows a Subject-Object-Verb pattern, meaning the main verb commonly appears at the end of a sentence. Particles help show the grammatical role of other words.

Can I use this tool to prepare for JLPT N5?

Yes. The sentences in this beginner version focus on common N5 vocabulary, particles and sentence patterns. It works best as additional practice alongside structured JLPT study.
