All-in-One Japanese for Beginners Review (2026): I Read It So You Don’t Have To Guess
So okay, I bought it myself (with my own money, nobody paying me to say nice thing) and I read through whole 520 page. Below is my honest opinion, including what real buyer say in the Amazon review section, and how it compare to other famous book like Genki or Japanese From Zero. I try to be fair, not just selling you something.

What Exactly Is This Book?
All-in-One Japanese for Beginners: 3 Workbooks + 2 Textbooks is wrote by Just Reality (a pen name, the author live in Mie Prefecture, Japan) together with Kumiko Matsumoto. It publish August 1, 2025, 520 pages, English language, and the whole idea is very simple: instead you buying 5 separate book for hiragana, katakana, kanji, grammar and conversation, they put everything into one thick book.
Basically it try to solve a problem that I see with my own students all the time — people buy too many different learning material, never finish any of them, then give up because they don’t know what to study next. This book claim to fix that by connecting everything step by step, so you always know “okay, next I study this.”
The 5 “books” inside are roughly:
- Hiragana & Katakana workbook (writing practice)
- Kanji workbook for beginner
- Particle and grammar workbook
- A “real-world communication” textbook for speaking
- A grammar/vocabulary reference textbook
It also come with free audio (they mention it many times — “no AI, no robotic speech, no awkward phrases” — I think this is answer to a lot of complain people have about other cheap Japanese book that use robot voice for audio).
What The Amazon Reviewers Actually Say
Okay this is the part everybody want to know before they spend money, so let’s check.
On Amazon UK the book currently sit at around 4.8 out of 5 stars from 57 ratings — this is honestly quite high number for a self-published Japanese learning book, most of competitor in this “5-in-1” or “7-in-1” bundle category sit around 4.3–4.5.
From what people writing in review, the good point people mention most often is:
- The book is genuinely beginner friendly, no confusing jump in difficulty
- People like that everything is in one place, they don’t need to “guess” what book to buy next
- The audio quality get praised a lot, since a lot of cheap Amazon Japanese books use obvious AI voice that sound strange
- Several reviewer say it help them finally “stick” with studying, because there is a clear order to follow
Complaint I saw (not many, but exist):
- Book is quite thick and heavy, so not so easy to carry around if you like study on train or cafe
- A small number of people feel 520 pages squeeze in one book mean each topic is not go super deep — if you want serious JLPT-level grammar explanation, you may need extra resource later
- Since publisher is small/self-published, print quality is not always as premium feeling as big publisher like Genki (some copy print a bit different than picture, this happen sometime with Amazon print-on-demand)
My honest tutor opinion: for a true beginner who just want ONE book to start with and not get overwhelmed, this rating make sense to me. For someone planning to go all the way to N2/N1, you will outgrow it, but that’s true for basically every beginner book, even Genki.

I know many of you asking “should I buy this or just get Genki like everyone say.” So here quick honest comparison table, from my own teaching experience.

Who Should Buy This Book?
I think this book is really good match for:
- People who feel “decision fatigue” from too many options, and just want ONE thing to follow
- Self-study learner who don’t have teacher to tell them what next step
- People who care a lot about audio quality (since they specifically avoid AI voice)
- Someone on a budget who don’t want to buy 5 separate book
Maybe NOT the best match for:
- Someone who already passed N5 and want deeper grammar
- People who prefer very slim, light book for commuting
- Learner who already using Genki in a classroom and just need supplement
My Recommended Study Order With This Book
Since I am tutor myself, here how I would suggest using this book if you buy it:
- Start hiragana + katakana section first, don’t skip, even if you “kind of” already know them — the writing practice really help muscle memory
- Use the audio EVERY DAY even just 10 minute, this is where most beginner get lazy and it’s biggest mistake
- Once you comfortable with kana, move slow into the kanji workbook — don’t rush, maybe 3-5 new kanji per day is enough
- Do grammar and conversation section side-by-side, not one after another, because grammar without using it in sentence is easy to forget

Frequently Asked Question
Is All-in-One Japanese for Beginners good for absolute beginner with zero knowledge? Yes, I think this is exactly who it made for. It start from hiragana, assume you know nothing.
Does it prepare you for JLPT N5? It cover a lot of same foundation vocabulary and grammar you need, but it’s not officially JLPT-aligned textbook like Shin Kanzen Master. Good starting point, not final JLPT prep book.
Is the audio really human, not AI? This is what publisher claim on the listing page, I cannot 100% verify this myself, but many reviewer do comment audio sound natural.

Final Verdict
Honestly, for a self-published bundle book, I was little bit skeptic before I open it (there are SO many low quality “learn Japanese fast” book on Amazon, you probably notice too). But this one actually deliver what it promise — clear step by step order, decent audio, and it solve the real problem of beginner not knowing what to study next.
Is it better than Genki? For classroom-style deep study, no, Genki still king. But for a beginner just starting alone at home, wanting one single book to hold their hand from zero — I think All-in-One Japanese for Beginners earn its 4.8 star honestly.
